Project

Martinus/KiwiRail - Civil Construction Works

The City Rail Link and Britomart Station enhancements consist of a 3.5km (2.2mi) long double-track rail tunnel underneath Auckland's city centre, between Britomart and Mount Eden railway stations. Two new underground stations will be constructed near Aoutea Square and near Karangahape Road.

Scope of work

Up-grading railway tracks at Britomart, installation of new track, turnouts, and civil works supporting the new line between Britomart and Mt Eden. MVM group initially provided Civil works services in the Britomart station including core drilling over 6000 precision located holes for laying the new rail tracks. Further works contracts were issued for the Britomart to Mt Eden sections.

Our Solution

MVM Group's civil construction capability provided safe delivery of works and high-quality outcomes for Martinus Rail. Jazz Vakalahi supervised teams of up to 40-50 workers that included supervisors, carpenters, skill labourers and an engineer. The core of the initial work centred around precision drilling of holes to locate the track sleepers on a prepared ground base. The team worked with the appointed engineers to develop an innovative drilling jig that ensured the consistent precision location of the holes. As a result output per shift was increased fivefold to up to 120 holes per night.

A major challenge to the programme came about when unforeseen ground defects created more than 20 years ago were discovered beneath the concrete pads. This necessitated removing of tracks and excavating the existing concreted pads to get at the defective ground areas. As the ground areas were corrected Jazz organised additional resources and shifts working around the clock to install steel tying and new concrete slabs.

The drilling programme was quickly resumed ensuring lost programme time was minimised leading to job completion within the agreed timeframes.

Britomart to Mt Eden works delivered included laying track on spindle systems, concrete boxing and pouring. The team worked with surveyors to sets heights, and installed track protection for the pours.

The concrete was pumped in using static pipes which required laying, securing and covering. At the end of each stage these were dismantled cleaned and moved to the next stage. MVM Group's meticulous planning and sequencing of the works before and after meant a seamless delivery of this phase of the project.

Outcomes

Martinus was able to rely on MVM Group to plan and sequence the works programme accurately and efficiently. MVM Group's adaptive approach in supplying nightshift options provided flexibility to keep the project on track resulting in all targets being met. This was one of Martinus Rail's first contracts in New Zealand. MVM Group's performance in the project's successful delivery has enabled it to gain more contract opportunities and establish a significant local team. MVM Group is now recognised as a trusted provider to Martinus Rail.

"They performed extremely well under challenging conditions and timeframes. Able to come up with innovative solutions to problems."
